Who is your real adversary? The person facing you across the mat in a tournament? The street thug lurking in a dark alley? No. Our most formidable opponent is our own human nature. The Buddhists believe there are 108 human shortcomings that must be overcome if one is to become enlightened. Christians believe there are seven deadly sins that can destroy one’s very soul. Each of these faith traditions in their own way focuses on curbing or transforming human nature. And, interestingly enough, so does the martial arts.
